My name’s Susan P and I run Essential Textile Art which can be found at www.essentialtextileart.com . This site is started essentially to share with my  Tuesday Challenge pieces with all the other participants. This year, 2008, the main focus is sharing the “Take it Further” Challenge results with occasional  blogs of my side wanderings. I am also a Textile artist which means at times I disappear into exhibition stress mode in order to get work out the door!! Located in Australia, I also teach workshops, lecture back at my old job on occasion and am part of the Textile group Decifemme.

    Hell Susan,
I am interested in textile art/surface design etc. I am a newbie and the most I have done so far is bought a few magazines. I am saving up to buy a sewing machine and I am going to teach myself to sew!!! I have looked at a few books but I really don’t know where to start. What should I learn first? There are heaps of great publications available but I can’t find anything for beginners/amateurs. I would be most grateful for your advice.

Best idea is to have a look at the books Fabric Art Workshop, The Quilting Arts Book or the Beginner’s Guide to Art Quilting. Also join a group interested textile art/ surface design and thatway you can find out about workshops etc. Then its just a matter of your skills and interests growing as you try different things. Notice however that those who are at the top of their game are masters of a very narrow range of techniques so don’t fall into the technique trap of thinking the technique is the art. Start with what interests you MOST, everything else can be explored in time. Play with making a A4 sized textile or “journal” page each month of the technique you are exploring and these become a record of what you have tried. Over time you will discover what sets your heart on fire and go with that. Have fun!
